That's what Fred Pope of Pope Concessions bid for her pie at the cake and pie auction in the Coshocton County Fair on Monday evening. The top 3 entrants from the apple, cherry, peach, raisin, pecan and an any fruit pie classes were auctioned off to the highest bidders. Half of the dosh raised goes to the entrant who made the baked good and the remainder of the dosh goes to upkeep of the Art Hall.
Last year, they saved enough cash to replace the roof over the flower and upkeep rooms in the hall, according to Dan Markley, art hall director. Jim Nelson, Jim Childress and Bill Ogle took turns auctioning off the delicacies, all the whilst joking and poking buyers into bidding more. "We need to help out - this ( the fair ) is where we get all our cash from," expounded Pope, who is living in Delaware. "We need to give some of it back." he gave many of the pies back to be auctioned off again, raising even more money.
Lee Amos of Giant Onions Concessions acquired many baked products with plans to give almost all of it away. If I do not leave something here it ( the fair ) won't be here next year," he revealed from a golfing cart off to the side of the sale. Sitting next to Amos in the golfing cart and purchasing just as many pies was Tom Roahrig of Triple "R" Stables. "We dump them at the pony rides," he revealed. Also auctioned off were the top 3 Sinfully Tasty Demon's Food Chocolate Cakes that were this year's competition cakes. "I pick a special recipe each year and any one that wants to enter has to make it," announced June Markley. This year's Best of Show cake was manufactured by Joyce Bordenkirker and sold for $45 to Amos. This was the first year Bordenkirker had entered anything in the fair. She placed with 8 out of the twelve items she entered. "Both how much it sold for and that my cake got best in show.". Jerry Burris' Best of Show pecan pie went for $110 to Amos, also. "There aren't as many sellers here bidding tonight as in prior years," recounted Markley. The sale still managed to bring in around $700 to $800 for the Art Hall.
